Okay, I Started a Blog: Why Am I Not Rich?

Episode 4

Does the title sound like a familiar thought for those of you who have created your own blog website?

Creating your own website for blog writing is a simple process. You can go through Wix or Wordpress. They don’t cost very much, if anything at all and it gives you creative freedom to create your site the way you want.

However, contrary to popular belief, you’re not going to strike it rich from your personal blog website from the beginning. In fact, I’m here to tell you that even after a year of running my site, I have only gained a whopping $84 from my website alone.

Now, I’ve made more earnings from my amazon affiliate links, my KDP journals attached to my site and my funnels attached to bring readers here to my medium site, this is true. But just from my website alone using Google AdSense…

Yup, only $84.

For those of you who are unaware, Google AdSense is something that you can add to your personal websites or your YouTube channel once you’ve reached a certain threshold. You can apply for Google AdSense HERE and once you reach the threshold required; you will receive an email advising you of next steps.

In my case, my website is created using Wix. It took me 6 months to reach the threshold to gain approval for Google AdSense.

Why do children do the things they know they are not supposed to do?

Each week I do a YouTube video about a parenting question. Something we as parents always think about but never really…

When I first got approved, I was very naive. I didn’t understand that, in order to earn, people would actually have to CLICK on the ads presented on my site to start earning. I thought that someone just seeing them would be enough. However, this is not the same process as it would be on YouTube. On Youtube, if the viewer watches the ad presented on your video you earn and if they click upon it… you earn more. This is not the same for a website. Keep that in mind.

Since beginning my addition of Google AdSense ads on my site I have been practicing different ways to present my ads and share my work and recording the interactions every thirty days.

Here’s what I found:

  1. Placing at least one ad on every piece you write helps with ad interaction.

  2. Placing in-article ads on articles works well, but display ads are universal and tend to gain more interaction on my site.

  3. Multiplex ads have gotten some negative results. Multiplex ads are ads that present multiple ads in a grid at one time within the area you placed your ad. Your site may benefit from this option — depending on the niche of your site.

  4. In feed ads are my next step. I will start using these to see how they pan out in January 2023. These are available for you to customize to look similar to your site. You can allow Google to style them for you or you can do it yourself. I have high hopes for this option because it seems more user friendly for my readers.

I have changed the locations, position, color and style of my ads to see the changes of click ability. I have realized that ads that are color coded to match the type of article I have created work better than the standardized white options.

Play around with your ads, change the locations, edit them to your liking and watch your stats over a 30-day period before making more changes. Once you find something that works, you can play off of that and monopolize on it.

Last month (December 2022) has been my most profitable month on my site with my newest changes. I’m not rich and still have to work a regular 9 -5 at the moment but I am optimistic that one day I will be able to quit my regular job and work on my site full time to support my family.

Additional Tip:

Do not allow your site to be your only income stream. Once you’ve gotten your site up and running and set up to start earning. Look into other options to start creating new streams. Here are some options to look into:

  • Creating Digital content

  • Low Content Books (KDP)

  • Amazon Affiliate

There is an amazing writer on Medium called Jenn Leach who writes about her successes, failures and changes throughout her process doing these very things. I personally enjoyed this article below that goes over low effort passive income options!

Low-effort passive income streams.

She is a constant help to me and my journey to earning income from my home. Many of the things I do, I do with her guidance through her posts on Medium.

My overall goal is to be able to work how and when I want to and be able to support my family that way.

I’m not greedy. I would be happy to have a total of 4K a month with my platforms. (Which is more than I currently make at my regulatory job) Once I get to that point, I will be perfectly content. That, and once I reach that point… as long as I am consistent — that amount will grow.

I hope this information has been helpful to all of you who are taking steps to creating your own personal income streams and getting out of the corporate world.

Good luck to all of us!

🧡Shine Bright, Kayla
